Event Details

Date and time: 5th  - 6th July 2014, 10.00am-5pm on both days

Calling technologists, data scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs, librarians, and anyone else interested in open data: You're invited to the Wikimania Open Data Weekend.

This isn't your traditional hackathon; no coding skills are necessary! Instead, bring your best ideas about how to work with open data. Whether you're a newbie or an experienced user, if you're interested in open data, you're invited to attend.

The weekend will include:

  • A general discussion on open data and the philosophy and the Semantic Web technologies, illustrating how this can be useful to publish and use data on the web. We will talk about current open knowledge databases such as Freebase, DBPedia and of course Wikidata.
  • Discussion about how open data, specifically Wikidata, is helping the Wikimedia movement as a whole covering its current integration with sister projects such as Wikipedia and Wikisource as well as future integration with these as well as Wikimedia Commons. A big part of this is getting to know the Wikidata project, how to edit, community processes, other ways of getting involved, whats happening on a day to day basis and what is coming soon!
  • The data source is not the only thing helping the movement but also the tools and applications that run and depend on the data stored within. We will take a look at some of the tools that already exist, amazing visualizations and applications.

Of course once you have a general overview of the open data world ideas will come flooding in for tools and applications that could be created and used on a daily basis as well as what might be missing in these Open Databases. No need to create them now, discuss, plan and involve others.

Wikimania and Wikimedia UK

This event is jointly organised by Wikimania and Wikimedia UK:

Wikimania  is a 2000+ person conference, unconference, festival, meetup, workshop, hackathon, and party, spread over five days in August 2014, preceded and followed by fringe events. It's the official annual event of the Wikimedia movement, where you'll discover all kinds of projects that people are making with wikis and open content, as well as meet the community that produced the most famous wiki of all, Wikipedia! Find out more at wikimania2014.wikimedia.org

Wikimedia UK is the Wikimedia chapter covering the United Kingdom. We exist to help collect, develop and distribute freely licensed knowledge (and other educational, cultural and historic material). We do this by bringing the Wikimedia community in the UK together, and by building links with UK-based cultural institutions, universities, charities and other bodies. We also represent UK-based Wikimedians to the Wikimedia Foundation and the global Wikimedia movement. Wikimedia UK is a registered charity. We are supported entirely by voluntary donations (principally through the annual Wikimedia fundraiser). Please note that we are a separate organization from the Wikimedia Foundation, and have no control over Wikipedia.
