    About this event

Calling all UCL students and staff

    • Are you curious about how Wikipedia works behind the scenes?
    • Are you keen to learn more about UCL’s Engineering history?
    • Would you like to contribute your knowledge and skills to a good cause?

We have the perfect event for you!

UCL Engineering have teamed up with Wikimedia UK to put together a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon.

The theme of the event is “Famous UCL Engineers - Past and Present”. The aim is to spruce up the Engineering section on the List of People associated with UCL page by linking existing Wikipedia pages, enhancing what’s on those pages and creating new pages for any noteworthy names that are currently missing.

We have two sessions you can choose from:

    Session 1 - 13.00 - 16.30 (Wednesday 1 June)

    Session 2 - 17.00 - 20.30 (Wednesday 1 June)

This will be an online event hosted on MS Teams.

    How will it work?

    Step 1 - Right now

If you are interested in contributing towards the UCL section on the world’s best loved Encyclopaedia, sign up for a ticket.

Please use your UCL email address so that we can add you to the event’s Microsoft Teams space in advance of the event.

Step 2 - The week before the event

The organisers will add you to a dedicated MS Team well in advance of the event, so please watch out for a notification in your UCL email.

The MS Teams space will have a section of resources ready for you to datamine. Feel free to explore the materials in the days leading up to the event. You are not going to be limited to only those suggested resources, of course, but they may present a useful starting point.

    Step 2a - Unforeseen circumstances

If your plans change and you find you can no longer attend, please cancel your ticket. This will allow us to make your space available to someone else. Thank you.

Step 3 - Attending the event

Join us in the MS Teams Event Channel. This is where the call will take place.

Both the afternoon and evening sessions will begin with a 90 minute Wikipedia training session, in which you will receive guidance on how to write for Wikipedia, how to cite sources correctly and how to use the editing tools of the platform. The training session will be recorded and will be available for you to access via the event’s Teams space afterwards.

Wikimedia trainers and volunteers will be available throughout the event to assist and answer all your burning Wikipedia questions.

Step 4 - Learn lots, meet other people and enjoy the experience!
