Event description

Description

The ground-breaking Wild Animal Welfare Committee (WAWC) has been formed to provide independent expert advice on the welfare needs of wild animals and related issues, to government and key policy makers. It’s a young project and the Committee wants to hear from you about where it should go, and how!

The conference reflects a growing recognition that the welfare of sentient wild animals deserves the same consideration as that of farmed and domestic species.

Speakers and delegates will discuss important questions about how wild animal welfare should be addressed in the UK and will help to shape the future work of the WAWC.

Chair: Dr Pete Goddard

Speakers include:

Professor Ranald Munro, former Head of Pathology at the Veterinary Laboratory Agency, former President of the World Society for the Protection of Animals, Chair of the Independent Expert Panel reviewing the English badger cull and Visiting Professor of Forensic Veterinary Pathology at the Royal Veterinary College.

Professor David Fraser, University of British Columbia. Since 1997, David has been Professor in the internationally respected Animal Welfare Program of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. His conceptual work has helped define current scientific approaches to the study of animal welfare.

Also on the agenda is the first report from WAWC’s review of welfare issues affecting all wild animals in the UK. The initial tranche of this major project, covering the human impact on the welfare of terrestrial mammals, will be presented by Dr Joana Cruz, University of York.

An interactive panel session will see WAWC members pitch topics of particular interest – such as the protection of welfare during conservation operations, and welfare concerns for marine mammals – to the audience for discussion.
