Event description

Description

The forest can be a place where people can escape; a place to retreat where they can think freely. It can also be a place where they can explore a part of the themselves without others watching.

Join Alec Stevens in a search to find evidence of the activities occurring in the forest, find out how a forest functions for a contemporary visitor, and reveal how we as a society have used this most primal of spaces.

Alec will share his practice through the basics of wood carving as well as creating time and space to reflect on and process the importance of forested spaces within modern culture. Participants will make a wooden object that directly links with their connection with the forest and collectively create a series of objects rich with history and story.

A light vegetarian lunch will be provided.

Please wear warm and waterproof clothing in case of inclement weather.

Note: Tickets to this event are non-refundable.

Based in Bristol, Alec Stevens is an Artist, Sculptor and Researcher. His sculptures and installations fuse craft and fine art practices (frequently fine art carving) to create works with a playful quality that are humorous and thought provoking. He uses wood and modern technologies to create dramatic experiences that unlock hidden narratives present in historic and urban locations.

Important: As part of a continuing dedication to sustainability (see our Environmental Policy), Fermynwoods has committed to serving only vegetarian food at events and workshops, though participants are welcome to bring their own food if desired. Please state any additional dietary requirements when booking a place on the workshop.

Carving a Place in the Forest is the fifth of our Outdoor Institute of Art: Wild Sharing workshops, where our unique location and communal approach brings like-minded people together for peer-to-peer learning, informal skill and knowledge sharing, providing both a creative and social opportunity.
