Event description
Join us, together with leading national experts, as we discuss what a wilder Wight could and should look like.

About this Event

Our Island is alive with incredible flora and fauna. From red squirrels to the reddish buff moth, the Island offers refuge for many precious species.

Our woodlands are some of the best for wildlife, our chalk grasslands boast hoards of butterflies, our rivers are home to healthy populations of water vole and you can find dormice nestling in almost every hedgerow.

The natural environment should be our greatest asset – underpinning the health and prosperity of our local communities and of future generations – and the Island could be a shining example of how nature and people can support each other. However the Island is not immune to the impacts of industry, intensive agriculture, development and climate change. Whilst we can be proud of our record in bucking the trend of decline in many areas, we are still witness to loss.

We could create a wilder Wight – an island where nature can truly flourish. We want to find places where wildlife can bounce back on a grand scale.

Could you play a part in wilding the Wight?

If you are involved with land on the Island or have an interest in this issue we would love for you to join us, together with leading national experts, as we discuss what a wilder Wight could and should look like. This event will play an important part in shaping our strategy for the next decade.

Join us to discuss with our expert panel, chaired by HIWWT Chair David Jordan. Speakers include:

Charlie Burrell, who will share his experience of rewilding his farm at the Knepp Estate in West Sussex

Derek Gow, farmer and conservationist, who is embarking on his own personal journey of re-wilding his land.

This event is also supported by the Environment Agency.
