This workshop will enable you to create a visual map for your fictional character's emotional journey and your script's dramatic structure. You’ll learn how to chart your character's internal conflicts and emotional transformation - this process takes you deep inside your character.
Devised by Laurie, the’ Character Map’, pulls stories from characters rather than forcing them to conform to arbitrary plot points or story structure beats. This unique, interactive workshop will comprise talks, discussion, presentation, and a constructive analysis by Laurie of a selected characters created by a participants.
This is a great workshop for visual thinkers who want to quickly "see" a character's story arc, it is practical and helpful, and the technique can be applied immediately to any character you are writing in any context. You’ll take away a tool, in six easy-to-use steps, that just might change how you think about story.
Laurie Hutzler has taught this method to some of the largest international media companies, who use it in everyday story development. Read more about Laurie here http://www.etbscreenwriting.com/laurie-hutzler/
Why are we running it?
We were literally blown away by the response to our last workshop, it was an amazing feeling seeing you altogether in one room in our hometown, being inspired by Laurie's teachings. Your feedback said you wanted more of the same and it was vaulable to you, so despite a hiccup with our funding source we were determined to go ahead with the 2nd workshop as planned.
As a 'talent-incubator' 'ideas-accelerator' (whatever you want to call us!) we see proposals for many projects with detailed descriptions of a ‘world’ or of the plot, but with less attention paid to character, with the result that stories or project proposals often feel a bit out of focus. We believe that great characters are what enable IP to be platform neutral and agile across media. An audience will follow a great character onto any platform that it appears on.
The better your characters become, the better the submissions we see: the closer we are to our mission!
Here is some of the feedback from our first workshop:
"Incredibly insightful analysis of character driven story. Linking personal experience to the characters we are developing. Real nuggets of wisdom that will help us as we scrutinise our own characters and stories."
"A very inspiring, illuminating, enthralling speaker leaving me with a lot to think about."
Still not convinced? Read a brilliant blog-post from Theatre Bristol writer Rebecca Megson about our last workshop, and have a gander at our Storify story direct from the Arnolfini
*We hope you'll agree that £6 is a snip for an event like this, which can bring so many of you together and learn from a leader in her field.
Hope to see you there,
The Wildseed Team xx
