William Blake, English poet, painter, and printmaker, was largely unrecognised for much of his lifetime. In 1824 he met Samuel Palmer and had an enormous effect on the latter’s work. In the first half of the twentieth century British Neo-Romantics, including Graham Sutherland, John Piper, Paul Nash, John Minton and John Craxton, influenced by Blake and Palmer, produced visionary works in which they embraced European modernism in a way that enabled their work to remain accessible to the general public.
