Event description

Description

Panel and document display

2019 marks the 800th anniversary of the death of William Marshal, regent of England for the child-king Henry III and perhaps medieval Europe’s greatest knight. He famously led the successful campaign to preserve the throne of Henry III after King John’s barons rebelled.

A panel of three top medieval historians will examine Marshal’s legacy and look more broadly at chivalric, noble and knightly culture in England.

The panellists are: Dr Thomas Asbridge (Queen Mary, University of London), a leading historian of the Crusades, whose biography The Greatest Knight: The Remarkable Life of William Marshal, the Power behind Five English Thrones (London, 2015) was adapted for BBC4; Dr Sophie Ambler (Lancaster University), an expert in thirteenth-century politics, government and religion whose new biography The Song of Simon de Montfort: England's First Revolutionary and the Death of Chivalry is published by Picador in May 2019; and Professor Louise Wilkinson (Canterbury Christ Church University), who is the leading scholar of the role of noblewomen in medieval England and is the biographer of Simon’s wife, Eleanor (Eleanor de Montfort: A Rebel Countess in Medieval England (London, 2012)).
