Event description
The launch of 'William Walker: Social Activist & Belfast Labourist 1970' by Dr Mike Mecham, with special guest Lord Paul Bew.

About this Event

William Walker (1870-1918) was the most significant figure in the Irish labour movement in the early twentieth century but became a marginalised figure. However, recognition of his place in Irish history has been growing culminating in this first full-length, and illustrated, biography. As well as detailing Walker’s life as a political activist in Belfast and beyond, his clashes with James Connolly, the divisions that surrounded him, and his opposition to Irish Home Rule, it reveals Walker’s social activism on behalf of the poor and working class, and his espousal of equal rights for women. It has been said recently that the questions he was attempting to solve remain vexingly familiar today.
