Event description

Description

The magic and mystery of woods and trees are embedded in our culture, from ancient folklore to modern literature. They offer us refuge, a place to play and a place to think. They let us dream of other ways of living.

Join Peter Fiennes, author of ‘Oak and Ash and Thorn: the Ancient Woods and New Forests of Britain’ (a Guardian Nature Book of the Year 2017), on a tour of the Wimbledon Common woodlands.

The walk starts at 11.30 am on 10th of March and will last for about 90 minutes. The terrain is fairly easy, but walking shoes (and weather-appropriate clothing) would be sensible. Our route begins at the south east corner of Wimbledon Common, at the crossroads of Cannizaro Road and The Causeway.

Children under the age of 8 are free.

Reviews of Oak and Ash and Thorn

‘Extraordinary… Written with a mixture of lyricism and quiet fury…Fiennes's book winningly combines autobiography, literary history and nature writing. It feels set to become a classic of the genre.' - Observer

‘Steeped in poetry, science, folklore, history and magic, Fiennes is an eloquent, elegiac chronicler of copses, coppicing and the wildwood.' - Sunday Express
