Event description

Description

As part of Winchester Green Week, we are proud to present our latest sustainable clothes swap! The last one was such a success, we thought we'd do it again. In conjunction with SavingThreads, the FairyClothesMother and Worn&Raised we'd like to persuade you that you don't need to buy new all the time! Here's why...

In the UK we buy more clothes per person than any other country in Europe. 'Fast fashion' means we overconsume and underuse clothes. As a result, we get rid of over a million tonnes of clothes, with £140 million worth going to landfill, every year. Increasing garment lifetimes is one of the most effective means of reducing its environmental footprint. Extending the life of clothing by an extra nine months could reduce carbon, waste and water footprints by around 20–30% each.

What should you bring?

Ladies clothes only, please. We will accept up to 6 items per person, including gently worn, dry-cleaned or laundered clothing with no stains or signs of wear; dresses, smart trousers, smart tops, jackets, jumpers or cardigans, coats, skirts, bags or shoes.

To give you an idea, we're talking about things:

  • we only wore once

  • that still have the tags on them

  • we kept because of ‘gift-guilt’

  • that looked perfect in the store, but not on us once we got it home

  • we bought on a final clearance

  • we could wear before we lost all that weight

  • we could wear before we gained all that weight

  • that just don’t fit right

  • that have been hanging in our closet, unworn, for over a year…

What won’t we accept?

Anything that isn’t clean or has any marks or visible wear.

No fast fashion brands, including supermarket brands like George, Florence & Fred etc. Peacocks, M&Co, BooHoo, ASOS, Pretty Little Things.

Nothing made of jersey unless it is formal wear ( a smart dress or top). No leggings, t-shirts, vest tops, sports clothes, sweat pants or sweatshirts, hoodies etc. No trainers or casual shoes. No casual jeans or denim with any tears or holes (even if they were bought that way).

How it works on the day

  1. Drop your clothes off during the first hour of the event (between 10 and 11 am)

  2. You’ll be given a swap card with a number and we’ll check over the items to ensure they are acceptable.

  3. One we have decided what items we will keep for the swap we will stamp your card with the corresponding number and ask for a donation of £2 per garment. You can take home as many garments as you brought.

  4. Any items we decide aren’t suitable you are free to take home with you again or alternatively donate to Oxfam.

  5. Have a cuppa or coffee and chat to other swappers while we sort out all the swaps

  6. Swapping begins at 11 am. Grab all the clothes you love – you can swap each stamp for a garment. They don't have to be like for like - you can swap a pair of shoes for a pair of trousers etc.

  7. If you have spare stamps at the end, you can bring them along to the next swap and use them then.

Leftover items at the end of the clothing swap event will be carried over to the next swap or donated to Winchester's branch of Oxfam.

If you want to #makeonechange for the planet and maybe walk away with something fabulous to wear at the same time, then we'd love to see you there!
