Event description

Description

Politician, writer, historian, builder – and painter. Winston Churchill had many talents. During his long and turbulent life he painted about 500 pictures and presented them freely to friends, family members, colleagues and foreign statesmen. Nowadays his paintings fetch substantial sums at auction. Professor Peter Alter is a specialist in Churchill’s life and career, having published a biography of him in German. He will explain why Churchill took up painting and will show a selection of his artworks, describing their origins and the significance that painting as a hobby had in Churchill’s life.

Peter Alter read Modern History, Economics and English Literature at the Universities of Cologne and Oxford (Corpus Christi), starting his academic career in 1970. In 1976 he joined the newly-founded German Historical Institute in London and stayed there, teaching at intervals at various universities, until 1993. In the following years he taught at the Universities of Cambridge and Duisburg-Essen, and gave lectures in Israel, the USA, the Netherlands and Austria. His main areas of research are modern Irish, British and German history, the history of science and Nationalism. He publishes in German and English.

The evening will start at 6pm for welcoming drinks. At 6.30 we will move to the lecture room for the talk and discussion, followed by drinks and canapés and further informal socialising; and curfew is 9pm. We are most grateful to the German Historical Institute and in particular to its Director Professor Gestrich for allowing us to use their premises and for their generosity in supporting this event.

We have up to 60 places and each attending Society member may bring up to two guests.
