About the courses

Gráinne Hambly will be teaching tunes from the Irish tradition by ear. Pieces will be chosen from a selection of Irish traditional dance tunes, airs and harper’s tunes from the 17th and 18th centuries, tailored to suit each level. We will look at how to add appropriate ornamentation and ideas for developing your own left hand arrangements. Elements of Irish style will also be discussed. Written music will be provided as back-up after the workshop.

Ailie Robertson will be teaching tunes from the Scottish tradition. We will look at dance tunes and slow airs, tailored to suit each of the 3 levels. Written music will be provided as back-up after the workshop.

Adriano Sangineto will give a workshop about “Getting the groove”, aimed at exploring the rhythmic aspect of the harp, developing that rhythmic-harmonic awareness that is essential for playing dance music. The workshop is divided into learning the basic steps of the dances (shown through the video), singing and studying the techniques on the harp. The course will deal with both Italian folk dances and original compositions of Adriano.

Tristan Le Govic will be teaching tunes from the Breton tradition. We will start by learning the tunes step by step and then bring up arrangements and variations. The course will be taught mostly in English but French could be used if needed. Written music will be provided as back-up after the workshop.
