Winter Nature Connection Workshop
Sat 17 December 2016, 10:00 – 16:00 GMT
“Your deepest roots are in nature. No matter who you are, where you live, or what kind of life you lead, you remain irrevocably linked with the rest of creation.”
Charles Cook, Awakening to Nature
Swap the craziness of Saturday Christmas shopping for a nurturing day of Winter nature, stillness and fireside warmth. Join me in beautiful Sussex woodland to explore simple techniques to revive your connection to nature. This one day workshop will re-awaken your natural childhood curiosity and help to rebalance the feeling of nature-deficit that we can experience as a result of our busy, mainly indoor lifestyles.
These mid December days are dark and still, it is as if the earth is holding its breath and waiting for something to happen. It is particularly beneficial to get out into nature at this time especially for people who experience winter blues. Science is starting to recognise the benefits of ongoing immersion in nature - it is vital for our optimal health and wellbeing. We know this intuitively but it is very easy to fill our days without once stepping off of the tarmac and concrete and onto the earth. Nature connections are formed when we go outside and have direct conscious sensory experiences in nature; when we slow to the pace of the natural world and pay attention to it with an open heart. Nature connection is built slowly over time.
A sparkle in the eye, full of energy, curious, grounded. These are some of the ways you might describe a person who has a strong connection with nature. Nature can inspire us, it is there to support us, it can allow us the space to breathe, to re-assess and to find clarity.
During this workshop you will be invited to participate in exercises which will allow you to build on the connections you already have with nature and to form new ones. We will spend our day in private ancient woodland, around and near to a fire circle. You will:
- practice techniques to expand your awareness whilst in nature
- practice techniques to minimise your disturbance whilst in nature (so that you can get closer to wildlife)
- practice mindfulness
- sit in a nature meditation(no prior experience necessary)
- have the chance to be creative (if you wish to)
- share your stories of nature around the fire
- learn about bird language
The workshop organiser and your guide for the day is Samantha Finn. Sam is a competent and friendly host. Her workshops are relaxed, fun, thoughtful and informative. Sam feels deeply the value of direct experience with nature and wants to convey this value to others. None of this knowledge is new, Sam is simply communicating knowledge that recent generations have forgotten.
The Nature Connection movement has been growing in momentum in the US for 20 years. It’s anchored in Native American culture but with learning from other indigenous peoples. The people leading this work are Jon Young of Wilderness Awareness School and his mentor the tracker Tom Brown Jn, and his mentor, the Apache elder, Stalking Wolf.
* * * * WORKSHOP LIMITED TO 8 SPACES * * * *
.........Allow yourself to take time out and step into nature...... You will not regret it.
This workshop involves a 700m walk across fields to the woodland. There are no styles. The woodland floor is uneven and there are fallen branches to step over. In the woods we will have a tarp shelter (if rain is predicted) and a fire and log seats. There will be tea/coffee/herbal tea/water and biscuits. You will need to bring your own lunch.
If you are unsure if this workshop is suitable for you, please contact me and I can help you decide: email@example.com
Please aim to arrive at 10.00am to allow us half hour for settling after our journeys, tea, meeting the group and an introduction to Nature Connection. We will leave the house to start our first activity at 10.30am
(Our house) West Oast, Buckholt Farm, Bexhill. We are in the countryside about 3 miles inland of Bexhill.
Bexhill-on-Sea or Crowhurst are the nearest railways stations (Crowhurst is on the London Charing Cross line). We can pick you up from Bexhill on Saturday morning – you will need to get a train to arrive at Bexhill by 10.00am.
Please let us know if you will be arriving by train. If you are we can drop you back to the station at the end of the day.
DO NOT DRIVE ON BUCKHOLT LANE UNLESS YOU HAVE A 4x4
For Sat Nav. Use TN39 5JA.
This is not our postcode, but it is the best for finding us. This is the postcode for Cobbs Hill Campsite on Watermill Lane. Find Cobbs Hill Campsite then continue on Watermill Lane for a further 100m North (away from Bexhill). Take the first farm track on the opposite side of the road from Cobb Hill. It has a small sign saying Buckholt Farm Private Road. It is a straight track about ¾ mile long and pot-holey for the first 200m. At the end pass the barns and follow the track to the right. You will see our house ahead of you. It is redbrick and has shutters. It takes about an hour to drive here from the outskirts of Brighton. Park outside our house.
Please drive slowly through the farm – there are often animals being moved about.
If you would like to car share let me know and I will put you in touch with other people who are driving or would like a lift.
Hopefully it will not be raining but we do have to prepare for the worst. This is a day of gentle activities. We won’t be jumping around. Twice during the day we will be sitting still on the ground (not under the tarp) for 20 minutes at a time. I would suggest wearing thermals and layers, and a warm hat and gloves. Waterproof coat and trousers and boots. Please borrow stuff if you are not sure if yours is waterproof. You can’t have too much warmth... you will want to be toasty. If possible bring a rucksack for your belongings so that you can have your hands free walking to the woods.
We have small yoga mats you can sit on to give a little insulation from the ground.
At this time of year the woods are likely to be muddy in places.
If you cancel your place your ticket will be refunded in full up to 28 days prior to the workshop. You will receive a 50% refund if you cancel within 15-28 days of the workshop (I will aim to sell on your place in which case you will receive a full refund). Refunds are not available if you cancel within 14 days of the workshop.
Really looking forward to spending the day with you.
