Course Content/Objectives

This CPD session aims to develop primary teachers confidence in teaching science outdoors during the winter. It will emphasize the benefits of outdoor learning and why it is important in general and the importance of viewing the outdoors as an integral and essential tool to teach science effectively, rather than seeing outdoor learning as an ‘add on’ in the sciences. We will provide some suggested activities that can be done in the school grounds or other outdoor areas to meet particular outcomes in the Winter months. A number of loan boxes will also be available on request to teachers who have completed the CPD with resources to help them teach the activities covered in the CPD. It will cover activities which are suitable for both first and second levels with potential for differentiation depending on the ability of the children being taught.

The CPD session will cover most of the outcomes from the Biodiversity and Interdependence strand of the experiences and outcomes in the sciences which have an outdoor element.

Outcomes sought

Completion of the session will:

  • Build teachers confidence and knowledge in outdoor learning and why this is important and beneficial to learning in the sciences.
  • Provide some suggested activities to allow teachers to cover experiences and outcomes from the Biodiversity and Interdependence strand in an outdoor setting in the Winter months.
  • Build teachers confidence in the additional health and safety requirements of learning outdoors in the Winter months
  • Give teachers access to loan boxes to help them deliver science activities in an outdoor setting, and also access to Cruickshank gardens to deliver these sessions if the outdoor area in their school session is limited.
