Event description

Description

Image of horseman in the snow

Come to an extra special winter event – a unique evening of poems, music and mince pies all in the evocative candlelit setting of St James’ Church near Stanstead Abbotts!

An extra special seasonal treat

Following last year’s sell-out performance of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, this year the Friends of St James’ are putting together an extra-special treat for all who love poetry and the English language.

Heart-warming and evocative

Directed by international director Mike Ashman and again with musical contributions by Globe Theatre musical director Jon Banks, the evening promises – like last year – to be a night to remember. A heart-warming and evocative beginning to the Christmas season.

Candlelight in winter time

You will be welcomed into the church by the glow of a warm fire pit outside, and into a setting like no other! Here, sat in eighteenth century box pews lit only by candles, you will be as your ancestors were centuries before: listening in wrapt attention to some of the finest words ever written.

Poems which span the centuries

Our selection of poems includes work from the anonymous writers of such classic works as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Winter Wakeneth al my Care. It will encompass great names like Shelley and Hardy. And of course it will include the work of such poets as Robert Frost, Joseph Brodsky and Eleanor Farjean.

And it will also include wonderful music which, at St James’, creates a truly haunting atmosphere. As well as incidental music from Jon Banks, the audience will also join in with such evocative carols as In the Deep Midwinter and the Coventry Carol.

Book early to avoid disappointment - tickets WILL sell out!

It will truly be a wonderful start to your festive season. But please do be quick. Last year’s event sold out very quickly indeed so to be sure of your seat, please do book now to avoid disappointment.

All money raised goes to support St James’ church, a redundant church owned by the Churches Conservation Trust and looked after locally by the Friends of St James’ Church.

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

It is possible to reach the venue on foot although we do not recommend this as the road from Stanstead Abbotts is dark and has no pavement. Instead, we advise that you make your way by car, heading out of Stanstead Abbotts towards Roydon. Once you cross over the A414, the road bends to the left and at this point, on the left, is the turn off to St James Church, which will be signposted. Do NOT park near the church but follow the road round where you will be guided to a car park.

If you miss the turn off to the church for any reason, continue down the road for a mile until you get to Roydon station where you will be able to turn round and come back up the hill.

What can I bring into the event?

Please wrap up warm and wear stout shoes as the church becomes cold after a while.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Yes, no admission without a ticket.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

You can give your ticket to someone else if you are unable to make it on the night.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Yes, this is fine. But only ticket holders will be allowed entry so PLEASE BRING YOUR TICKET WITH YOU.
