Event description

Description

The Winter Social is a re-run of last years 100km course that takes in some of the surrounding area of North Essex/South Suffolk Boarder. You'll take in parts of various cyclo cross courses, woodland single track, country roads, farm tracks and bridleways. We have tried to keep as little tarmac as possible but it is unavoidable.

Meeting at 8:30am in Colchester the route sets off as and when you are ready.....this is not a race! We will probably have a coffee or two so aim to set off around 9:00-9:30am.

There are no planned feed stations so please make sure you bring enough food for the day. The route takes you through various villages so there are planty of opportunities to refuel should you need to.

For those coming by car there is ample free parking just outside the town centre (email us for details). Those coming by train might need to book their bikes on depending on which train you get. If you need help working out which ones are easier then feel free to email and we will let you know.

This is a self-supported reliability ride, there is no mandatory route, no signposts, no broom wagon. You don’t need to pay, but we ask you to sign up so we have a rough idea of numbers. Turn up with your bike, your mates and your kit and go for a ride. If you get lost at any time, just get un-lost and enjoy some of our local trails.
Some details in bullet points just to cover details.

  • Around 100km long

  • Mixture of on and off road. Gravel, CX and MTB's recommended. Basically anything with a wider than 28c tyre should be fine depending on weather and how muddy it becomes. If it is like 2019 you want something with good grip and mud clearance.

  • Leave the meeting point any time you like after 9am.

  • Route will be published the week before the ride if not sooner when it’s checked later this week.

  • The route back comes through lots of epic singletrack on MOD land, if you’re knackered you might want to miss this bit out. If you hear gunshot don't worry too much as it is normally blanks. Watch out for tanks!!

  • Recommended stops at Dedham and Wivenhoe depending on how far you want to go before stopping. It will finish in the pub for those that want to have a beer after the ride.

  • It’ll take you at least 5 hours especially if stopping more than once so make sure you have lights.

  • Bring your buddies, it’s not a big group ride, it’s not a lead ride, you will need your own navigation. Do not expect to be able to turn up and just follow someone around.

  • There has been a lot of storm damage in the woods so tree felling has been on-going....watch out! There have been a few casses of falling branches but felling rarely happens at weekends.

  • Some of the route ventures onto footpaths so use common sense. If asked to dismount please do so. Saying this we have ridden the route several times and have had no issues. Smile, say thank you and giving people space normally goes a long way. (Worse case just tell people you are lost and that Google Maps sent you that way!)

  • Go at your own pace, enjoy it.

  • Please wear a helmet! Some of the route is very tricky and we wouldn't want anyone to have an accident.

  • If you’ve got any questions, the best place to post them is via Facebook or the website.
