Winter Trail Running - skills and safety
Event Information
About this event
If you're a keen trail runner but feel vulnerable straying away from known routes in the winter months, then this is the event for you! A single day course covering the fundamentals of trail running through remote or mountainous terrain in winter, designed to give you the knowledge, skills and self-sufficientcy to stay safe in challenging conditions*.
You will run with experienced local guides who will give you advice on equipment, weather, route-planning, navigation and risk-asssessment for winter trail running.
Our chosen route will depend on the weather, snow conditions and your experience but whatever the weather, you will learn a lot along the way! All runners will experience the wilderness and rugged beauty of Glencoe in winter, as we take the 'trail less traveled' through breathtaking mountain scenery.
Suitable for seasoned trail runners, capable of running 10km offroad. No winter experience neccessary.
Girls on Hills is a 'no-frills' experience - we don't include food or accommodation, allowing you the flexibility to choose your own to suit travel logistics or budget. We do have accommodation partners who offer discounted rates to Girls on Hills‘ customers if you are interested. Otherwise, there is plenty of budget accommodation locally, such as hostels/ bunkhouses/pods.
Due to the important role that weather and snow conditions play in deciding what route to take, we won't be able to confirm the exact plans for the weekend until the morning of the course, but you can expect to hear from us by email the week before the event with information on where and when to meet, as well as what to wear and bring with you. We will meet up to check kit and discuss final plans for the day over coffee before we start.
Our local guides can offer a shuttle service to/from local accommodation, and are committed to making your logistics work. We pride ourselves on being 'approachable and relatable' so please please do get in touch with any concerns or queries you might have now or nearer to the event. We look forward to having some fun and showing you some great winter trail running in the Scottish Highlands!
* Please note that this course does NOT cover the skills neccessary for high mountain terrain and therefore does NOT include the use of ice axe or mountaineering crampons. For full winter mountaineering skills we refer you to our 'Winter Skills 101' courses.
