About this event

A half-day online course giving participants

  • the skills and confidence to identify trees and shrubs when not in leaf
  • a set of c.25 labelled UK native twigs posted to your address prior to the course
  • a free copy of the FSC Aidgap Winter Trees guide

Identifying trees through the winter months, when they rarely hold any leaves or fruits, is a real art form; but surprisingly simple when you know what to look for. This course will give participants a chance to look at the majority of British native species and learn how to confidently identify them, as well as a set of labelled twigs to keep to aid revision and impress your friends.

This unique online course provides each attendee with a set of the majority of british native tree twigs, numerically labelled, alongside a copy of the field guide.

The course comprises a pre-recorded tutorial, running through the species one by one, followed by a self-test and then a live Zoom Q&A session. The course can be paused, rewound or skipped at any point during the 24 hours, giving you the chance to have a break when you want, and go back over any species you are less familiar with (or sections where you feel you’ve let yourself down on the test). There is a full test at the end which will be available online in perpetuity for you to come back and test your memory of the species in the future.

There is also a ‘bespoke’ ticket option, for which we will set you up with the tutorial on any date of your choosing.

All proceeds from the course will go to supporting our endangered species conservation work.

The course also has a surprise guest appearance!

In the event you can't find the email please be in touch. Please ensure you have given us the correct address you would like your package to be sent to.

Course certificate

This course can be used as part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). We invite attendees to download their own certificate and complete the numbers of hours spent on the course, as we are aware some attendees spend more time reading up about courses before the day, and writing their notes up and re-sitting the course tests afterwards. The hours on your certificate should accurately reflect this time.
