An introduction to the wildlife of the Halvergate Marshes in winter.
About this event
The Halvergate Marshes are an extensive area of low-lying land in the Norfolk Broads, forming a rough triangle between Acle, Reedham and Great Yarmouth. It was traditionally used as grazing pasture. Water levels on the marshes were originally maintained by a complex network of dykes and drainage windmills. As well as creating conditions suitable for cattle, a rich variety of wildlife is also found here.
During this online event, Carl Chapman (Wildlife Tours & Education) will introduce us to some of the wildlife that you might expect to see on the Halvergate Marshes during winter, including those species that migrate here for the season.
This event will be followed by a guided walk across the marshes, led by Carl, on Sunday 6th February 2022 (to be booked separately, with a small charge). We will seek out the wildlife that occupies the reedbeds and waterways that are such a familiar part of this part of east Norfolk.
(This event is part of a series organised by The Mill and the Marsh Folk project to restore Stracey Arms Drainage Mill. The project is supported by a major grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund).
