About this Event

Welfare event: Thursday 5th March 09.00 - 16.45

We would like to invite you to our 2020 animal health and welfare event, to be held at Oulton Hall, Leeds on Thursday 5th March. The day promises to be informative and thought-provoking, covering the topics below (may be subject to change and additions):

  • The future of food – Professor Nigel Scollan
  • Facing the challenge: 2022 zinc oxide removal – Mel Stokes
  • Managing tail biting: Genetics and practical on-farm considerations – Dr Fiona Roberts
  • Livestock market survey – Charlie Mason
  • Good Pigs – an Italian welfare journey for native breeds – Anna Madeo
  • The environmental impact of farming – Lizzie Wilson & Grace Whitlow
  • Sustainable livestock production systems – Professor Lisa Collins
  • Livestock and Climate Change: Is there a Role for Regulation? - Professor Michael Cardwell
  • On-farm euthanasia; the Anoxia concept - Anette van der Aa
  • How can meat production be part of the solution to sustainability issues rather than part of the problem: breakout sessions – OKO and WD

We begin with tea and coffee at 09.00 for a 09.30 start, with regular breaks and lunch included. The day will run until 16.45.

We have now introduced a charge of £48 (inc. VAT) for the conference, but our dinner is still free to attend.

Welfare event dinner: Thursday 5th March 19.30 - 22.00

In the evening, we are hosting a free, complementary dinner at Oulton Hall from 19.30 - 22.00. This offers a fantastic opportunity to network with peers and other delegates. Places are limited though, so book early!

CIEL National Pig Centre tour: Friday 6th March 09.30 – 11.45

On Friday morning we have arranged a tour of the recently opened National Pig Centre - a leading research facility for pig nutrition, behaviour, health and production system research. All themes identified by the livestock industry as central to improving quality, productivity and future competitiveness.

They have an outdoor sow unit and an indoor system, which is unique in Europe and enables direct comparison of the different systems.

You will be able to view both the indoor and outdoor facility. Please ensure you wear warm outdoor clothing and suitable footwear to walk to the outdoor farm (10 mins). You will need to be pig-free for 48 hours and a boot dip will be available for biosecurity purposes

Accommodation

You will need to book this separately but we have secured a preferential rate, with Oulton Hall at £113 B&B per night. Call 0113 282 1000, connect to the reservations team and quote 'WD animal welfare day'
