Event description

Description

The ongoing publication of ‘how to’ and ‘self-help’ books – on everything from work to relationships to money to children – says something about our collective sense of lack. Life can be confusing, and we want help to navigate it well.

In an expression of what lies at the heart of the gospel – God taking the loving initiative to respond to our need – the book of Proverbs reminds us that God has not left us alone to steer through life as best we can. Here, if we will respond to the invitation given, is wisdom to guide us through the delights and demands of everyday living. Proverbs makes it clear that wisdom doesn’t begin in human autonomy, but in relationship with God, where wisdom is then worked out in different spheres of life – at the city gates and in the market squares, in our homes and in our workplaces – wherever God has called us.

Join us for this day workshop exploring the Book of Proverbs. We’ll look at how the book trains our worldview and forms our character and decision-making. We’ll see how our understanding of Proverbs is enriched by the movement through the book as well as its place in Scripture as a whole. We’ll ask how it shapes our lives together and as disciples of Jesus.

The day will be led by Antony Billington, Head of Theology at LICC, with Neil Hudson, Imagine Project Director at LICC, and will involve a combination of input and interaction. The day will be especially suitable for church leaders and preachers who would like to reflect on how to preach the book of Proverbs from a whole-life perspective, but will also be helpful to others who would value an opportunity to explore how this part of the Bible nurtures Christian identity and discipleship in today’s world.
