WISERD 2017 Annual Conference

5 July - 6 July 2017

Neuadd Reichel, Bangor University

The WISERD 2017 Conference will take place over two days (5 - 6 July) at Neuadd Reichel, Bangor University, Bangor.

The conference is open to colleagues from across the academic, policy, public, private, and third sectors in Wales. 

The theme for this year's conference is "The Decade of Disruption" and includes a variety of presentations and workshops on the following key themes: 

  • Technological disruption
  • Political disruption 
  • Disruption to biographies 
  • Self-identity
  • Demographic disruption  

 

Keynote Speakers

We are delighted to welcome our keynote speakers for the 2017 conference.

Professor David Shepherd, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Bangor University will be delivering the welcoming address on Wednesday 5 July.

Hilary Wainwright, Editor "Red Pepper" magazine will be giving an open lecture on Wednesday 5 July which will be held in the recently opened arts and innovation centre - Pontio, Bangor University. There will be an opportunity for informal networking during a drinks reception. This will be a free ticketed event. 

Sophie Howe, Future Generations Commissioner for Wales will be giving the keynote presentation opening the conference on Thursday 6 July.

 

PhD Student Competitions

PhD student poster competition - sponsored by The Learned Society of Wales awarding a prize of £200 for the winning poster.

ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Centre - "3MEI" - Three minute engagement/ impact prize

Based on the "Three minute thesis" format, PhD students have the opportunity to present an account of challenges and/or achievements in their research with respect to engagement and/or impact.

The winner will be announced at the WISERD 2017 Conference, and will receive a prize in the form of book tokens to the value of £200. To enter, students need to register before Friday 26 May 2017, by sending an email with "3MEI" in the subject box to WiserdAnnualConference@cardiff.ac.uk .

 

Booking

Registration for the conference opens on 28 March 2017 with early bird rates applying until 14 May 2017. 

Two Day Rates

Early Bird Standard Two Day Rate: 5 and 6 July (for bookings made prior to 14 May 2017) - £140.00

Early Bird Standard Student Two Day Rate: 5 and 6 July (for currently registered PhD students, for bookings made prior to 14 May 2017) - £60.00

Late Standard Two Day Rate: 5 and 6 July (for bookings made after 14 May and before 9 June) - £200.00

Late Standard Student Day Rate: 5 and 6 July (for currently registered PhD students, for bookings made after 14 May and before 9 June) - £70.00

One Day Rate

Early Bird Day Rate (for bookings made prior to 14 May 2017) - £70.00

Early Bird Student Day Rate (for currently registered PhD students, for bookings made prior to 14 May 2017) - £30.00

Standard Day Rate (for bookings made after 14 May and before 9 June) - £100.00

Standard Student Day Rate (for currently registered PhD students, for bookings made after 14 May and before 9 June) - £35.00

Conference Dinner

This will be held in the 1884 Restaurant, The Management Centre, Bangor University.  There will be a limit of 50 places available and these will be allocated on a first come first saved basis.

Accommodation options for Wednesday 5 July only

Accommodation - Bangor University Halls - £38.50

Accommodation - Bangor Management Centre - £70.00 (single room) or £81.00 (double room, single occupancy or  £97.00 (executive suite).

TERMS & CONDITIONS

Conference registration fees include access to conference sessions, lunch and refreshments. Fees do not include travel, the conference dinner or accommodation. The conference dinner and accommodation is available as an optional extra. Payment must be received prior to the event.

The organisers cannot accept liability for costs incurred in the event of the conference having to be cancelled as a result of circumstances beyond its reasonable control

Early Bird Rate: To qualify for ‘the Early Bird rate’ you must register by 14 May 2017. Bookings received after this date will be subject to the full delegate rate.

Cancellation Policy: A full refund will be given for any cancellations before 14 May 2017. Cancellations after 14 May 2017 will incur a 50% cancellation charge. No money will be refunded for cancellations after Friday 2 June 2017. Cancellation must be made in writing / by email. Substitutions are acceptable but must be requested in writing / by email.

The Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data & Methods (WISERD) draws together social science researchers from a number of disciplines including sociology, economics, geography, political science and many more.

The Institute was established in 2008 and is based within the five Universities that make up the St David’s Day Group in Wales: Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, South Wales and Swansea.

WISERD is committed to capacity building within the social sciences in Wales, the UK and internationally.  The Institute offers a series of workshops, seminars and conferences, aimed at those with an interest in the social sciences.
