Big Data: Big Opportunity or Big Concern?
On September 30th 2014 Women in Telecoms & Technology (WiTT) will hold a joint meeting with Women on Boards (www.womenonboards.co.uk) where we will discuss an important topic for our industry: big data.
Much has been written about big data: today we produce in two days as much information as mankind created from the dawn of civilization until 2003; according to IDC, big data will be a $16.1 billion market this year, and it's growing six times faster than the overall IT market; and a McKinsey report estimated that a retailer using big data could increase its operating margins by 60%.
However, according to a recent survey by Forrester Research, one-third of respondents consider the term "big data" to be “very confusing.”
Our September meeting aims to clear up some of the confusion, and to separate big data myths from realities. WiTT director Annette Nabavi will chair a stellar panel of experts on the subject:
- Edwina Dunn, co-founder of dunnhumby, the company behind Tesco’s Clubcard, My Kroger Plus and other loyalty programs around the world, and the CEO of Starcount;
- Susan McLean, Of Counsel, Morrison & Foerster (UK) LLP, author of a new paper on the legal aspects of Big Data;
- Kim Nilsson, Swedish astronomer, data scientist, co-founder of Pivigo Recruitment and Pivigo Academy's managing director; and
- Heidi O'Mahoney, IBM's Big Data leader for UK and Ireland.
The evening will run as follows:
18:00: Networking and welcome drinks
19:00: Panel discussion followed by Q&A
20:15: Informal networking
We would like to thank our sponsor for this meeting, FDM, and our host, HSBC.
And we look forward to seeing you on September 30th!
