Event description
2019's final Word In Your Ear will see David Hepworth and Mark Ellen journey into the astonishing worlds of Tom Waits and Elton John.

About this Event

Tom Waits is about to be 70 – on Dec 7 to be precise – and we thought we’d light a few candles by asking old friend of the podcast and revered rock biographer Barney Hoskyns in to look back at Lowside Of The Road: A Life Of Tom Waits (published to mark Waits’ 60th in 2009) and to colour in the events of the last ten years. The astonishing tales of Tom evolving his stage character as the doorman at the Troubadour could make an evening on their own.

And the Guardian’s award-laden rock critic Alexis Petridis is coming in, too: ghostwriter of the best-selling, fantastically funny and engaging Me: Elton John. Again, the story of Elton getting his management to shoot down a giant promotional blimp with Rod Stewart’s face on it is merely the tip of the iceberg. We have the LA clubs, the first Russian tour, his days as a session payer, the chilling reflections on his childhood, and Keith Richards (“a monkey with arthritis”) to come.

Two extremely accomplished books and two highly entertaining speakers. December 2. Tickets here. See you there!
