WIYE Presents David Rodigan Plus Backing Vocals
Mon 20 March 2017, 19:00 – 22:00 GMT
From the record shacks of the Caribbean to the dancehalls of Ladbroke Grove, David Rodigan has been a figurehead for Jamaican music for 40 years. DJ, revered evangelist and broadcaster - Radio London, Capital, Kiss FM, the BBC - he's spread the word about every pioneering soundsystem, every priceless crackling dub side and met every key figure in the landscape. He'll be talking about his magnificent upcoming memoir My Life In Reggae.
The recent movie 20 Feet From Stardom shone long overdue light into the world of the backing singer. We're delighted to be joined by Britain's pre-eminent female backing singers Tessa Niles and Gina Foster. Between them Tessa and Gina have been asked for by name by David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Grace Jones, Robbie Williams, Elton John and many others. Their CVs include Live Aid, the Concert for George and the Nelson Mandela birthday concert. Their conversation with David Hepworth and Mark Ellen is a sneak preview of their show Unsung Singers in which they talk about the art of the backing vocalist, their experiences in the studio and on the biggest stages and the professional requirements of a job which can call on you to sound like everything from a gospel chorus to a Barbie doll.
The evening kicks off at the Islington pun in Tolpuddle Street N1 soon after 7pm on Monday March 20th and ends around 9:30pm. It'll be another cracker.
