About this event

Hobbies • Books

Winston Churchill famously remarked that the threat of the German U-Boats was the only thing that had “really frightened” him during World War II. Certainly, for Allied seamen, the U-Boat was a hidden menace lurking invisible beneath the waves.

As we will learn this evening, the U-boat war was central to the Battle of the Atlantic, during which thousands were killed – but, through archival work, memoir literature and unpublished diaries, Roger Moorhouse returns the submariners’ voices to history.

Roger will be in conversation with fellow military historian Robert Lyman, whose books include, most recently “The Rise of the Third Reich”.

We hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be an evening of extraordinary stories – of both fear and courage.
