Women and Casualisation
Event Information
Description
Cambridge UCU and ARU UCU invite you to a seminar and forum discussion on the topic of women and casualisation. Our guest speaker, Prof. Carole Leathwood is an expert on inequalities related to gender, social class and race in higher education.
Not only does research show that women are significantly more likely to find themselves employed on casual contracts, but once employed in casualised and precarious work, women face particular difficulties, partly because of the weaker maternity rights associated with some of these types of contracts and partly due to difficulties in reconciling variable hours or job insecurity with caring responsibilities. Furthermore, once part of the casualised pool at universities, women are often denied the opportunity to transition to more secure contracts, getting sucked further into exploitative employment.
This forum will bring together staff to examine how casualised contracts are used, their effects on staff and how this impacts on our employment rights and universities more broadly. By generating discussion and pooling ideas we hope to develop a set of demands that will address the injustices faced by casualised staff.
Join us to discuss how we can work together.
Lunch will be provided.
