A free event on women and conscientious objection to military service.Speakers will include:-
Professor Lois Bibbings, University of Bristol, author of Telling Tales About Men: Conceptions of Conscientious Objectors to Military Service During the First World War (Manchester: Manchester University Press, 2009) will look at how World War 1 Conscientious Objectors were viewed in the context of early twentieth-century ideas about gender;
Emerita Professor June Hannam, University of the West of England, will talk about Mabel Tothill and other socialist women's support for conscientious objection in Bristol;
Local author and historian Lucienne Boyce will talk about Lily Girdlestone of Bristol and Women’s Resistance to Compulsory War Work in the First World War;and
Susan Gregory will speak on women Conscientious Objectors in World War Two.
The event is free. Teas and coffees will be available. Bring your own lunch; or there are shops and cafes nearby.
The building has disabled access, a disabled toilet, and a lift to the first floor. There are 4-5 steps up to the room where the event is being held. If this will make the meeting inaccessible for you, please email lucienne@lucienneboyce.com as we may be able to relocate to another room in the building.
REGISTRATION IS BETWEEN 9.30 AND 10 AM. EVENT STARTS AT 10 AM.
