Event description
This interactive online workshop is aimed at anyone who support women in a professional context in North West England.

About this event

The subject of gambling and its associated harms is currently a hot topic and is acknowledged by experts as a serious health issue with far reaching consequences.

Gambling related harm can negatively affect finances, mental health, and relationships, not just for the gambler but for the those around them. The issue of women affected by gambling related harms is perceived as a hidden problem, and by raising awareness of the issue we are confident that we can make it more identifiable for people who support women.

Our training is CPD accredited and aims to raise awareness of the topic of women and problem gambling, enabling workers to confidently recognise, respond and refer women who are experience gambling issues into our support and treatment services.

GamCare is a charity and the Women’s Programme training is funded by the Tampon Tax fund. Due to limited spaces on each workshop, if you are unable to attend the session we would appreciate it if you could cancel your place on Eventbrite or just let us know and we will to do it for you.

Organiser Rachel Simm

Organiser of Women and Gambling Related Harms (North West England)

There are around 500,000 problem gamblers in the UK, up to 20% of whom are women. For every person who has a problem with gambling, up to 10 other people can be affected, and women are disproportionately at risk of experiencing gambling-related harm.

Gambling-related harm can include debt, relationship difficulties, housing issues, gender-based violence, depression and anxiety, feelings of isolation, and suicidality.

During this 2 hour FREE Zoom training session, we will cover more about gambling-related harm, risk factors, impacts, and how to identify and support people affected. Learn about our treatment network and how to refer clients to treatment services. This training is essential for any professionals or volunteers who work with women and families.

GamCare’s National Gambling HelpLine takes over 30,000 calls a year from men and women affected by gambling-related harm and last year over 7,000 people accessed free treatment through our treatment network across England, Scotland and Wales.

Professionals or volunteers working in the Public or Third Sector in the North West are invited to join this training session. Other sessions are running in other parts of the country - please use the 'contact organiser' function to message me if you can't find a session in your region and I will send you more information on who to contact.

Please note: you will receive an email with a link to access the training at least 3 days prior to the date of the event. If you haven’t received the link, please check you junk/spam folders or contact me directly on rachel.simm@gamcare.org.uk

Content warning: We want everyone who joins our training to feel safe and empowered to take care of their own wellbeing. We therefore feel it is important to state that this session covers gambling-related harm in some depth, and will include references to emotive subjects including addiction, abuse, self-harm and suicide.
