Women & HIV

A lot has changed in HIV over the last 30+ years! Unfortunately, the current needs of women who are living with or at risk for HIV are not often discussed. As a result, many people have questions, such as:

- What puts women at risk for HIV? Who is most at risk and why?

- Can women with HIV safely breastfeed if they are on treatment? Why does the answer differ by country?

- Why does transmission occur through breastfeeding?

- Why do some women continue to breastfeed even if they're counselled not to, and how can we support HIV+ women to formula feed, despite so much pressure to breastfeed?

- What are the risks for vertical transmission (from mother-to-child) in the UK today?

- What might prevent women from using condoms and what other prevention technologies can they use?

- How can we have constructive conversations with women on all of these subjects?

This half-day course will answer these questions and more. This course will help you understand and respond to the particular needs of women who are living with HIV as well as those most at risk of HIV infection. We will explore issues around biological risks to HIV, sexual assault, violence, HIV disclosure, and we will pay particular attention to breastfeeding and childbirth. Together we will consider how to support women through complex issues such as condom negotiation and, in particular, we will develop creative solutions to improve support for women who are formula feeding due to their HIV status.

Up-to-date information about testing, treatment and prevention technologies will also be provided.

This course is accredited by the Royal College of Midwives.
