Dr Genora Joseph

“You Don’t Look Like An Engineer, Sweetheart”

Synopsis: I plan to start off the talk by explaining my choice of title. It is a statement I encountered early in my career on a site visit. I want to discuss why we need to dismantle pervasive stereotypes about what engineers should look like and dispel any lingering notions that women are not suited for engineering professions. In this talk I hope to give a concise description of my current work as a Research Fellow in Agricultural Aerodynamics and my career trajectory in engineering. I also want to use this talk as a platform to advocate for more female participation in engineering disciplines, particularly aerodynamics research. I will comment on how misconceptions about STEM disciplines and lack of female mentors prevent girls of varied backgrounds from enrolling on engineering courses. I will be candid about the challenges that I have faced in my own career.

Ms Sophie Harker*

“Future Concept Aircraft Engineering”

Synopsis: An insight into concept engineering in one of the biggest aerospace companies in the world, BAE Systems. The talk will cover the Advanced Projects team, including the Aerodynamics and Performance subset, the application of mathematics and engineering principles in concept aerodynamics, and what my role entails, both day to day and long term. I will also touch on what the future aerospace environment could look like, including top level (public) information on the Tempest project, and the work I do in the field of hypersonic aircraft, focussing primarily on the collaborative work with Reaction Engines and their SABRE technologies.

*Will present via Skype
