Event description

Description

The first in a series of talks from high profile female entrepreneurs, we are delighted to welcome Mandy Haberman as our inaugural speaker. The event is open to all and we especially welcome local entrepreneurs, innovators, academic staff, students and graduates.

As well as hearing from an inspirational speaker these events will give you an opportunity to develop your network and hear about the wealth of opportunities for you to grow your business with the Ipswich Waterfront Innovation Centre at the University of Suffolk.

Inspirational mother of 3, Mandy Haberman is an expert on infant feeding with over 35 years experience. Formerly a graphic designer, her career changed direction when her third child was born with a syndrome that made normal feeding impossible. Dedicating her life to helping mothers feed their babies in the best way possible and to helping youngsters develop feeding independence, she became an award-winning inventor and entrepreneur.

Resulting from the medical needs of her own child, her first product, the Haberman® Feeder, is used in hospitals around the world. Mandy is best known for her second invention, the Anywayup® cup – the world’s first totally non-spill trainer cup. Invented in the early 1990s, the cup’s patented technology has revolutionized the nursery market worldwide. Products using Haberman technology are sold in over 30 countries, with annual sales reaching 40-60 million units every year. Her most recent invention is the Haberman® Suckle Feeder which helps mothers to sustain breastfeeding and offers bottle fed babies the next best thing. Of medical significance, Suckle is designed to avoid the problem of over-feeding in infancy, that is a recognised cause of obesity in later life.

Mandy is the recipient of a number of prestigious awards for her innovations: British Female Inventor of the Year in 2000; shortlisted as a finalist of the prestigious Veuve Clicquot Business Women of the Year Award and recognized by HM Queen Elizabeth as a ‘Pioneer to the Life of the Nation’ in 2003. She is also an inspirational speaker advocating for women in business, highlighting the importance of innovation and intellection property.

Mandy has held numerous advisory committee positions for both the British government and the European Commission. Participated on the jury panels for the European Patent Office Inventor Award in 2014 -2016. An active advocate for intellectual property rights, Mandy also served on the Project Board of the Business and IP Centre for The British Library and on the Editorial Board of Patent World, Informa Law. In 2014 Mandy was appointed Director of the Intellectual Property Awareness Network (IPAN) and in November 2015 she was appointed Non-executive Director of the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) Steering Board.
