Ladies, gentlemen, and everyone in-between – come and celebrate International Women’s Day, 2018 at Poplar Union!

Taking place over the 10 & 11 March, this two day festival is open to all and provides a space to enjoy top quality performances, talks, workshops, film screenings and discussion groups. Get involved and together let’s open up a vital and complex discussion surrounding women’s rights, gender and what it means to be a woman in 2018.

Saturday 10 March

Fresh Water Theatre Co. presents: Inspiring Women Drama Workshop


Suitable for ages 7-11

Bring iconic women from the past and present to life in this interactive children’s workshop led by Fresh Water Theatre Co. and celebrate International Women’s Day!

Hot Spots: Menopause and Women’s Wellbeing


Every women who goes through menopause will experience it differently. Join us and share experiences, gain more understanding and knowledge from a range of guest speakers (to be announced).

Zine Making Workshop


Celebrate women artists, activists, community leaders, musicians, family members and unsung heroes in this Women in Focus themed zine making workshop.

Boxing Taster Session & Q&A


Suitable for ages 14+

Who says fighting like a girl is a bad thing? Join Natasha Fuller, qualified boxing judge, referee and coach in this fun, challenging 40 minute taster session followed by a 20 minute Q&A about Natasha’s career as a woman in the world of boxing.

Feminism in Theatre


Suitable for ages 16+

The rise of the feminist movement in recent years has had an influence on pop culture and many facets of art, but how does feminism inform the kind of theatre that has been produced over the last couple of years?

Jazz Herstory Collective


Join jazz drummer and founder of Jazz Herstory, Liz Exell, as she talks on stage with a collective of jazz musicians, sharing their experiences and stories of being a woman in jazz.

Let Drum Beat


Let Drum Beat are an all female band using Afro-Brazilian percussion to create energetic and paced rhythms, passing through spontaneous dance and vocal harmonies.

Baque Luar


United by their love of Afro-Brazilian roots music, this all-female vocal and percussion group will end the first day of the Women in Focus festival with a bang!

Sunday Assembly


Join Sunday Assembly East End for a special meet up focused around gender and equality for our Women in Focus Festival.

Writing Masala Monologues workshop with Sangeeta Pillai Lander


British Asian women, I want to hear your sex stories. Funny stories. Saucy stories. Sad stories. Together, we’ll write & craft your unique tales. And from there, we’ll create a professional theatrical production. Coming to a theatre near you in 2018…

Poetry Hour


Suitable for all ages

Sit back and enjoy the rhymes, rhythms and raps of the Women in Focus Poetry Hour, featuring Paula Varjack, Maria Ferguson, Nikky Norton-Shafau and Michelle Mangal.

Capoeira Taster Session


This taster session will introduce the elementary principles of Capoeira Angola movement and interaction, as well as some of the music. Come prepared to move, play and sing!

Film & Post Screen Discussion: Under the Skin


Come and enjoy this free screening of Jonathan Glazer’s iconic, Under the Skin, starring Scarlett Johanson as you’ve never seen her before, followed by a post-screen discussion chaired by film maker and spoken word artist, Paula Varjack.
