Celebrating Women in Science: an afternoon with leading women from STEMM*

Come and hear some of the leading UK ladies in Science talk about their inspirational personal and professional journeys, then network with fellow staff members and students (FST students are most welcome to attend)

The programme offers the following talks and activities:

• 2:00 pm : "Women studying and working in STEMM*: the rewards and challenges"

Professor Jane Clarke.

Professor Jane Clarke is Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Senior Wellcome Trust Research Fellow in the Department of Chemistry of the University of Cambridge. She began her career in science as a teacher in a comprehensive school. She later moved with her family to the USA, where she took a master’s degree that kick-started her new career in research. She is particularly interested in encouraging young women to stay in science as so many talented women are lost at the stage where they move between post doc and faculty positions.

• 2:30 pm: World Cafe: "Advancing women in STEMM* at University of Westminster" - networking activity

This interactive networking activity will be the occasion to exchange ideas and opinions with fellow colleagues and students about important issues related to women working in STEMM* at the University.

• 3:25 pm: "An inspirational career in science"

Professor Annie Bligh.

Recently nominated as one of the 175 faces of Chemistry, Professor Annie Bligh is Head of the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Westminster.

Heavily involved in international activities in China building education and research ties, Annie’s inspiration for the chemical science begins in Hong Kong. With research evolving from synthetic drug discovery to the investigation of natural products, her current research has particular focus on traditional Chinese herbal medicines.

• 3:55 pm: How to become a leading lady in Science?

Nancy Honey and Terry Marsh.

Nancy Honey, photographer and co-author of the '100 leading ladies' book displayed at Cavendish Library, will present some of the portraits she took of leading ladies in Science.

Terry Marsh, one of the 100 leading ladies photographed by Nancy Honey, will share her experience and tips as a leading woman in STEMM* and former CEO of WISE ((Women into Science and Engineering). After lecturing in statistics at Surrey University, Terry joined the BBC as a data analyst, moving on to produce award-winning science and technology programmes for the BBC’s Computer Literacy Project.

The event will be followed by refreshments and networking from 4:30 pm onwards.
