Event description
The Blue Planet Effect - What is it and how can we use it?

About this Event

When Blue Planet II aired in 2017, it brought global high profile attention to environmental issues. This stimulated general public interest in conservation, sustainability and environmental concerns across the sector, creating interest and a demand for action that, previously, had been limited.

This event will explore the impact that Blue Planet II has generated, providing an opportunity to explore and understand this phenomenon, learn more about harnessing this for our own personal and professional development and how to apply it to our work and contribution to society.

Speakers

Leanne Trow, WasteAid UK and Frith Resource Management

Leanne will provide insight around google trends since the Blue Planet aired, showcase the WasteAid report “No Time to Waste”, which was launched by Sir David Attenborough and contains shocking statistics, and she will share relevant case studies. WasteAid is a ground-breaking charity supporting the development of sustainable waste management solutions in developing countries where no organised waste management systems exist, to reduce pollution and improve livelihoods. Leanne is the Volunteer Co-ordinator for WasteAid and a consultant at Frith Resource Management, an independent waste management consultancy, and here she works on UK and international projects. Leanne’s professional expertise lies in waste and resource management, local government waste and recycling collections, and waste treatment technologies. She has a BSc in Environmental Geoscience and is a graduate member of CIWM.

Emily Cunningham, Marine Conservation Consultant, Research and Educator

Emily is a marine conservation specialist on a mission to inspire the British public about the wildlife in UK seas. Much of her recent work has been in the development of multi-million pound public engagement projects, all aiming to engender stewardship of our marine environment. She is currently working to influence the sustainability of offshore developments and is increasing her involvement in marine habitat restoration. Alongside her consultancy work, Emily is an independent researcher with interests in public perceptions of the marine environment, participatory conservation and UK cetaceans. She has recently published research on UK humpback whales where all of the data was collected by members of the public. Her website is www.emilycunningham.co.uk.

As ever there will be the space and opportunity, discuss and ask questions about the issues raised, and to network and share experiences with colleagues in the wider sustainability community. There will also be the opportunity for delegates to update the group on news and events.

We look forward to seeing you there!
