Event description

Description

Join us for the Yorkshire and Humber regional conference in Sheffield, aimed at addressing the protection gap that women and girls who have fled the world’s most brutal wars and repressive countries fall through in the UK asylum system. Many have been raped or have experienced domestic violence, but are not given the basic protections that we take for granted when it comes to other women in this situation.

The Protection Gap Campaign says that no woman seeking asylum should have to tell her story:

  • In front of her children
  • To a male interviewer or interpreter if she is not comfortable with this
  • To someone who doesn't understand how trauma affects memory
  • Without being offered counselling if her story is traumatic
  • Without information about her rights as a woman within the asylum system

Refugee women will be joined by mental health practitioners, solicitors, politicians, activists and supporters to discuss a progressive way forward in the region
