Event description
WOMEN IN WAR (PATRIOTISM IS NOT ENOUGH; COMMEMORATING AND REMEMBERING WOMEN AT WAR). A small group walk with a qualified London guide.

About this event

‘At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them’. A line from the famous Laurence Binyon poem. In various wars fought by this country hundreds of thousands of women have paid the ultimate price and it is right and proper we remember them.

At times the immense contribution to the war efforts by women over the years has been either side lined or overlooked. In this walk we focus on the invaluable contributions women have made in the services, in factories, on the home front supporting their families and coping with the aftermath of war. Some of these women paid the ultimate sacrifice.

We will learn about the two main heroines of the Crimean war (one forgotten for the best part of 100 years), a brave nurse executed at dawn by firing squad, the Muslim pacifist murdered by the SS, the only living head of state who saw military service in World War II and the woman Hitler considered the most dangerous woman in Europe! Added to this are some personal stories from the family of the guide.

This walk has been curated and is being led by Philip Scott a qualified London Guide.

All of the proceeds from this walk, apart from the Eventbrite booking fee of £1.50, will be donated to Combat Stress. Combat Stress is the UK's leading mental health charity for veterans. They provide specialist treatment and support for veterans from every service and conflict. Their work is invaluable and we are proud to be able to support them.

The group size is being kept small and we are limiting the group size to 12.

Meet on Saturday 30th October at 2pm by the Florence Nightingale statue, Waterloo Place, London SW1Y 4AN

Looking forward to meeting you on the walk!
