Women of the Bauhaus
About this event
One of the many radical aspects of the Bauhaus was that entry was open to all, incl women. The school produced many extremely talented female artists and designers but little is known about them. Design Historian Susan Holder is here to change that!
In 2019, we saw the centenary of the founding of one of the most important and influential art schools of the 20th Century – the German Bauhaus. Although it was only in existence for 14 years its experimental and progressive teaching produced many pioneers of modern art, craft and design who are still admired today.
But one of the many radical aspects of the Bauhaus was that entry was open to all, including women, who at that time in Germany were restricted to receiving their art education at home. The school produced many extremely talented female artists and designers but little is known about them and its history is dominated by the men who studied and taught there – such as Gropius, Joseph Albers, Paul Klee, Laszlo Moholy – Nagy, Kandinsky, Marcel Breuer.
We may have heard of the weaver Anni Albers, who was finally acknowledged with a retrospective exhibition at Tate Modern in 2018, but who were the other highly accomplished and pioneering women of the Bauhaus - what are their stories, their achievements and legacies?
