Event description

Description

Halling to Rochester - Another shorter day of around 6 miles that allows us to take the detour off the Pilgrim's Way itself into Rochester and fitting that we should have extra time to see this beautiful cathedral and....we may actually get a stamp!!

We start off from Halling station and then across the new bridge across the Medway open in 2016. From here we walk to Peter's village on the way to Aylesford and then walk along the river East.

Rochester has it's own saint, William of Perth, who came from Scotland and because of where he was murdered, just south of Rochester, it's suggested that he was on pilgrimage there. Both Rochester Cathedral and Castle can be seen from quite far away due to the flatness of the flood plain.

On our approach to Rochester we pass under the Medway Bridges and continue on the path close to the water before turning slightly inland around the boatyard. We then find ourselves walking on a firm path along the edge of Baty's Marsh renamed after Robert Baty (Director of the Royal Acadamy of Dramatic Arts) who campaigned for the area to be made a nature reserve in 1987. This is one of the last salt marshes on the Medway not to have been drained.

Rochester Cathedral was founded by St Augustine in AD604 and the present building dates from 1080. There is a traditional Pilgrim doorway which we will seek out to make our entrance.

To make sure we are in flow with the weather, whatever it may be, please wear layers as this allows you to take off or add as temperature varies. Bring a bottle of water and a snack or two e.g. some nuts or a protein bar in case you get the nibbles and also money for lunch and drinks.

Final details will be emailed out to those signing up at the latest the day before the walk.

We only have ten places available on this walk, so sign up as soon as you can!

With "Women on Foot" we have weekend walks each month. We alternate the weekend days so that one month the walk is on a Saturday and then the next month on a Sunday.

It’s a day of investing in you, your health and wellbeing; of putting yourself first and as the opportunity arises, doing business in a different way! But you don’t have to be a business woman – you can be a woman who enjoys the company of other women, a woman who has chosen to take a day out from her job to look after herself, a mum who is child free for a time and choosing to spend her day in this way.

Walking is a wonderful way to get some exercise, to see a new part of a city of a corner of the countryside. It’s a wonderful way to socialise and to network too. When you’re walking you don’t need to keep eye contact and this can be very useful when challending and difficult conversations are taking place. In all my years of walking with women I have observed the most frivilous and lighthearted conversations one moment and the next a very deep and serious discussion the next. Walking allows all of that.

At the end of the day you’ll –

  • come away refreshed and with a clearer head having had a day in the fresh air

  • you’ll have met great women

  • you’ll have chatted, shared and learnt

  • you’ll have enjoyed coffee and lunch stops and perhaps an after walk drink

  • you’ll feel energised and exercised

  • you’ll be looking for the date of the next event..

This is time and space for you and it’s going to happen once a month.
