Event description

Description

Rochester to Aylesford - As this was a detour for the pilgrims, we too need to get back on track so we start by retracing our steps from Rochester along the River Medway and back to Peters Village and then from there pick up the main Pilgrim's Way to Aylesford.

Our first new sighting is the isolated 12th century Burham Church of St Mary's and opposite it is Burham Court. Close to here, at the ferry landing, is a stone claiming that this was the point at which the Romans crossed the Medway when invading Britain. We are walking on ancient paths indeed.

The other thing to see on this route is Aylesford Priory which is the oldest Carmelite Priory in England founded by St Simon Stock in 1242. Henry VIII expelled the community in 1538 but they returned in 1948. The priory is open to the public so if we get our timings right a visit is indeed possible.

We finish today at the station in Aylesford after some drinks in celebration of our achievement. Our walk will be around 9 miles.

To make sure we are in flow with the weather, whatever it may be, please wear layers as this allows you to take off or add as temperature varies. Bring a bottle of water and a snack or two e.g. some nuts or a protein bar in case you get the nibbles and also money for lunch and drinks.

Final details will be emailed out to those signing up at the latest the day before the walk.

We only have ten places available on this walk, so sign up as soon as you can!

With "Women on Foot" we have weekend walks each month. We alternate the weekend days so that one month the walk is on a Saturday and then the next month on a Sunday.

It’s a day of investing in you, your health and wellbeing; of putting yourself first and as the opportunity arises, doing business in a different way! But you don’t have to be a business woman – you can be a woman who enjoys the company of other women, a woman who has chosen to take a day out from her job to look after herself, a mum who is child free for a time and choosing to spend her day in this way.

Walking is a wonderful way to get some exercise, to see a new part of a city of a corner of the countryside. It’s a wonderful way to socialise and to network too. When you’re walking you don’t need to keep eye contact and this can be very useful when challending and difficult conversations are taking place. In all my years of walking with women I have observed the most frivilous and lighthearted conversations one moment and the next a very deep and serious discussion the next. Walking allows all of that.

At the end of the day you’ll –

  • come away refreshed and with a clearer head having had a day in the fresh air

  • you’ll have met great women

  • you’ll have chatted, shared and learnt

  • you’ll have enjoyed coffee and lunch stops and perhaps an after walk drink

  • you’ll feel energised and exercised

  • you’ll be looking for the date of the next event..

This is time and space for you and it’s going to happen once a month.
