The Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice presents...

Women’s Access to Justice (Social Justice Week 2017)

Sheffield Hallam University will tackle issues such as sexual violence, human trafficking and domestic violence at an upcoming one-day event dedicated to women's access to justice.

The Women's Access to Justice Day will take place on Monday 3 April as part of Sheffield Hallam's annual Social Justice Week, and will be open to the general public, charities, service users, students and academics with an interest in the field.

The day will seek to raise awareness for prominent issues with local and international communities, covering areas such as sexual violence, those seeking asylum, human trafficking, and domestic violence.

Key speakers for the event will include Cristel Amiss from Black Women's Rape Action Project and Dr Sunita Toor from Sheffield Hallam's Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice, who is currently working with a number of police forces in India to improve women's access to justice.

The free event, which is being organised by academics and students from Sheffield's Hallam's criminology department, will also include a focus on related volunteering opportunities for the general public and students.

Andrew Fowler, Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Sheffield Hallam and co-convenor of the event, said: "Improving access to justice for women is a critical area to understand and challenge if we are to keep working towards a more equal and just society."

"We are keen for this event to not just be a talking shop around these complex issues - but that we actually provide real action at the end of it. This action, aside from informing new ways of thinking, will come through the volunteering opportunities which will be made available on the day."

Emily Cartmell, a Criminology and Psychology student at Sheffield Hallam and one of the organisers of the event, said: "Many of the charities that work in these fields rely on the good will of volunteers to keep going and, ultimately, help improve the lives of the people they support.

"We're hoping to make a volunteering pledge at the end of the day which will see those who sign up commit to a number of hours to the charities involved."

The free event will take place in the Showroom Cinema on Monday 3 April (8:30am – 4pm) and will include lunch and refreshments. There are limited spaces available for this event.
