Event description

Description

This is an 8 week improv course that will take place every week on the day and time outlined above.

If you’re not laughing, you’re learning. Usually, though, it’s both and all the funny is coming from you! This course is all about exercises that jazz you up and free your mind, and games that push and challenge you to be your funniest self. By the end you’ll always be the funniest person in the room!

No experience in performing or comedy is necessary to sign up for this course.

Women only? Sexist much?

We’re not massively enthusiastic about the level of diversity in the improv and comedy industry up North — it isn’t non-existent, but we want more! — so we’re attempting to reach out to various minority groups in various ways to encourage everyone to jump in. Comedy and art is better when it represents everyone.

Of course, we could be more tactful about it but vague encouragement never got the masses out of their seats. So here we are.

What you will be doing in the Sessions

Other than laughing? Mostly hilarious drama exercises that will learn you some important improvisation skills which you can use both on and off the stage.

Many of the useful skills covered include:

  • Good listening skills
  • Stagecraft and stage presence
  • Basic character creation
  • An understanding of what makes a scene funny

Opportunities

At the very end of the course you’ll be offered the (optional) opportunity to perform with your classmates in one of ImproQuo’s monthly shows, giving you the chance to put your new skills to good use straight away in front of a small, chilled audience. No pressure, obvs.

What you’ll get out of the course

A bloody good time. But more tangibly, you will also gain a basic understanding of scene and character work for the comedy stage, and you will have played a variety of improv games which you can take with you anywhere (quite a few double as, or are derived from parlour games). You may even find that ideas come more readily to you in many situations.
