About this event
Organised by Aberdeen Morning Star Readers and Supporters Group, this event will consider the historical and social context of prostitution within patriarchal societies; and the campaign to abolish prostitution through the decriminalisation of those (mainly women) caught up in the sex trade, whilst criminalising the men who use prostitution and those who profit from it. Known as the Nordic Model, and in line with Ash Regan MSP's Unbuyable Bill currently going through the Scottish Parliament, it also calls for support for women to exit prostitution and the eradication of factors that push women into prostitution in the first place, mainly related to poverty and exploitation.
We will have two speakers from Nordic Model Now! - Our first will do a short presentation that will explain the basics of the Nordic Model and compares it with full decrim and why the NM is preferable. Then we will hear from a survivor of prostitution, who will speak about various aspects of prostitution, informed by her lived experience, and why she passionately believes the NM is the way to go.
Robyn, a sister from our Morning Star Women's Readers and Supporters Group will attend in person to provide the context in which prostitution has become so prevalent and its impact on the safety of women and girls.
Kate Ramsden will chair and there will be a Q&A session once we have heard from the speakers. The event will be held in person and online. A Zoom link will be sent out nearer the time for those wishing to participate online.
