FAQs

When does the course run?

Weekly from Thursday 2nd November - Thursday 14th December 2017, from 5.00 - 6.30pm.

What will the sessions contain?

Each session will last 90 minutes and will involve a mixture of warm up, running, boxing technique, fitness exercises and stretching.

Please come to the session ready, or come early if you need to get changed. Wear comfortable clothing like shorts and a t-shirt, a sports bra and a pair of trainers. You’ll need to bring a bottle of water as well. Please let the trainer know at the beginning of the session if you have any injuries so we can try and work around them.

What skills can I learn from martial arts?

The skills you learn from martial arts can be vital to get you out of nasty situations in one piece if you experience street harassment or violence. It can help you handle yourself better and to stay calm when faced with aggression. Martial arts can teach you how to defend yourself, and most importantly, help you get out of there without getting hurt. Martial arts can make you fitter, stronger and more confident.

Who are Solstar?

Solstar is a left wing, anti-fascist and women-led martial arts gym, running out of a community centre in North London. Solstar was set up 18 months ago with the aim of creating a gym that had all the team spirit and community of martial arts, without the ego that might be found in other gyms. Our other classes are mixed, but our instructors are always women and we aim to encourage more women into the sport by creating an open and unintimidating environment.

Who is the trainer?

Anna is an ex-pro fighter in Muay Thai kickboxing (the art of four limbs – hands, elbows, knees and legs). She’s been training for over 15 years and teaching for 8 years. Before she retired from professional fighting, she held the English, British and World Titles in Muay Thai at 57kg. She has also fought professionally in mixed martial arts (MMA).

Are there age or ability requirements to enter the event?

This course is aimed at women and non-binary people, aged between 15-25. We can't accept any men to the space but we won't turn anyone away on account of their age. All boxing abilities welcome. NB. Unfortunately this session is in a building which is not disability accessible.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Parking is almost impossible here so we recommend coming by tube to Swiss Cottage station or 31 bus.

What can I bring into the event?

Bring water, comfortable clothing, trainers, and your own gloves or wraps (if you have them). Please arrive early if you need to get changed before the session.
