Description

The Women’s Classical Committee UK is pleased to announce its 2018 Annual General Meeting on the theme of "Activism" on Wednesday 18th April, at the Institute of Classical Studies, Senate House, London, from 10am to 5pm. Confirmed speakers include Professor Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz (Hamilton), Dr. Donna Zuckerberg, Dr. Marchella Ward (Oxford) and Marcus Bell (from ACE). The afternoon will be dedicated to a Critical Whiteness workshop, facilitated by the Equality Challenge Unit. More details of the programme for the launch are available on the website.

Our theme this year is ‘Activism’. What does it mean to be a classicist and an activist? How does activism intersect with research, teaching, administration, outreach? How can we make sure our activism remains mindful of structural inequality and advantage, including our own? How should we approach the risks that come with public activism? People of any gender expression or identity who support the WCC UK's aims are welcome to attend this event.

Registration Options:

Interested participants may register as participating in person for the whole day, the morning only (10am-12.30pm) or the afternoon only (1.30pm-5pm); half-day participants are welcome to lunch, which will be at 12.30pm. You may also register as an online participant who will take part in the discussions live through Twitter. In-person spaces are limited, so please sign up as soon as possible if you wish to attend. Registration as an online participant will be open up to the event itself.

In-person registration is free for paid-up members of the WCC UK, who have received instructions on how to access this ticket type over e-mail. If you need the instructions to be resent, please e-mail us at womensclassicalcommittee at gmail.com. For non-members, tickets cost £10.

Membership of the WCC UK currently costs £20 per calendar year, or £5 for students, unemployed, retired or underemployed members. If you wish to purchase membership and take advantage of your free ticket to the AGM, then please follow the instructions for joining on our webpage and the appropriate code will be sent to you.

We are delighted to be able to offer a limited number of travel bursaries for attendees who are students or on low incomes. If you would like to apply for a travel bursary, see the instructions on our website.

You also find more information on the Women's Classical Committee, including our aims and activities, on our website.

Any other queries about the launch event or the WCC should be directed to womensclassicalcommittee at gmail.com.

Accessibility

The meeting room for the event is on the third floor of Senate House, which is accessible via a lift. There are heavy doors between the lift and the meeting room. There is an accessible toilet on the third floor.

We have the use of a quiet room attached to our meeting room for any attendees to use if they need to nurse or rest. The room will also be used for serving lunch and refreshments during breaks.

For more details, please e-mail womensclassicalcommittee at gmail.com.

Child-friendly Policy

The Women's Classical Committee is committed to making our events as inclusive as possible, and recognises that the financial and practical challenges of childcare often impede people from participating in workshops and conferences. Anyone who needs to bring a dependent child or children with them in order to participate in one of our events is usually welcome to do so, but we ask you to inform us of this in advance so that we can take them into account in our event planning and risk assessment.

Attendees who wish to bring children are welcome to do so; the safety and well-being of children remains their carers’ responsibility at all times.

The designated quiet room may be a suitable space for nursing. Senate House does not have any dedicated baby changing facilities. If you would like to discuss your needs further, please get in touch – our e-mail is womensclassicalcommittee at gmail.com.
