50 year anniversary of Ruskin's inaugural Women's Liberation Conference

About this Event

Ruskin is holding a special event on Saturday 22 February to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of the Women’s Liberation Movement.

In February 1970, Ruskin College students organised the first, large-scale gathering of the Women’s Liberation Movement. The conference, held at Ruskin College, set in motion a re-shaping of the landscape for women’s rights and a struggle for gender equality across the world that continues today.

In the 1970s they outlined seven key demands:

This event – 50 years on – will be an opportunity to reflect on how far the movement has come and where it can go from here. The topics for debate will include:

What does the Current Political Climate mean for Women?

The discussion panel will include:

Roberta Hunter-Henderson, feminist campaigner and original member of the Women's Liberation Movement

Outline timetable for the day

2.00pm – Guests arrive

Foyer exhibition of feminist memorabilia of the last 50 years

Refreshments (tea/coffee) from 2pm, available all afternoon

2.30pm – Take seats

Short film of Women’s Liberation Meeting of 1970, ‘A Woman’s Place’, while guests are seated

3.00pm – Welcome and introduction of Chair and Panel, first Q&A session

Questions from audience on the topic 50 years on: How far have we come? discussing the original seven demands of the WLM

4.00pm – Break for refreshments

4.15pm - Second Q&A session

Questions from audience on the topic What does the current political climate mean for women?

5.00pm Buffet and musical entertainment
