Event description

Description

THIS EVENT IS FOR STAFF AND STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD ONLY

Women’s Voice will be marking the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women #orangetheworld with a special programme to which all colleagues are invited. The event will take place on Wednesday 22 November 12 noon to 2pm in Gilbert Rooms 1, Peel Park campus, as the official day falls at the weekend.

Speakers will include Dr Lucy Winrow, Editor ProtectED Review and Dr Luba Pirgova-Morgan who will talk about our ground-breaking ProtectED Code of Practice and accreditation scheme, which is being adopted by universities nationwide. Lucy and Luba will focus on the research and Code of Practice drawn up by the Design against Crime group in collaboration with our Security team and external partners to ensure student safety, security and wellbeing.

HR and Counselling and Wellbeing colleagues will also present an overview of services available to both staff and students.

Entertainment will be provided by students from the School of Arts and Media and there will be plenty of opportunity for networking. Light refreshments will be available.

The United Nations' (UN) International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is an occasion for governments, international organisations and non-governmental organisations to raise public awareness of rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence against women. One of the additional aims of the day is to highlight that the scale and true nature of the issue is often hidden. In Europe, one in three women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence since the age of 15 and every second woman has faced sexual harassment.

The day has been marked annually on November 25 since 2000, historically based on the date of the 1960 assassination of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic. The event invites you to #orangetheworld to symbolise peace for women and we invite you to help raise awareness by wearing something orange on Wednesday.
