ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
Join landscape photographer Fiona McLean for a day out at the Birks of Aberfeldy photographing waterfalls and river scenes surrounded by the stunning autumn colours.
This is the second day of a two-day workshop aimed at women who are at an intermediate level in photography.
DAY 2
The second day will build on what was taught on the first day and will focus on more advanced techniques of long exposure waterfall photography:
- practising with different shutter speeds
- using different lenses
- trying different types of filters
- composition techniques
- mistakes to avoid
You do not have to attend Day 1 of the workshop in order to attend Day 2. However, you should already be familiar with the basic camera settings for long exposure and use of filters which is taught on the first day.
Fiona provides tailored guidance and instruction in a supportive and encouraging environment. The skills you will learn include which camera settings to use, how to choose the right exposure, which filters to use when, and how to compose the scene.
NOTE: A good level of fitness is required as we will be walking on trails to get to some of the falls and water features. Total distance over the course of the day could be from 3-8 kms with 100-300 metres elevation gain depending on the locations we go to.
EQUIPMENT NEEDED
- A camera that allows manual settings (mirrorless or DSLR)
- A tripod
- Filters - Polarising and Neutral Density (ND) filters
- Hiking boots / sturdy footwear - wellies are suggested for getting into the water
- Suitable outdoor clothing - waterproof jacket and trousers, warm layers, hat and gloves
EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDED
- Shutter release or app for remote shooting
- Spare batteries and memory cards
WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED
- Transport (unless arranged separately)
- Food/drinks
- Personal expenses
- Insurance (medical, travel, equipment)
If you would like to attend but do not have all the equipment, please let me know as I have some spare items that I can lend or I can suggest where to rent.
In order to reduce emissions and our impact on the locations we're shooting at, I encourage car pooling and can provide transport from Edinburgh or from an agreed spot along the route from Edinburgh to Perthshire.
ABOUT FIONA
Fiona took up photography back in 2000 shooting on a Canon SLR. Her initial training was in documentary photography and photojournalism but she always captured the landscape and scenery when she was travelling and doing outdoor activities. She returned to photography seriously in 2016 and shortly afterwards fell in love with long exposure waterfall photography. She has been chasing waterfalls ever since and has photographed hundreds of them across a number of countries. Fiona is also a qualified Mountain Leader and is certified in outdoor first aid.
Please get in touch if you would like to find out about private 1-to-1 photography tuition, either in person or virtually.
