About this event
Discover wonderful waxcaps - magical and mysterious fungi whose vibrant colours adorn the grasslands of the Yorkshire Dales in autumn. The day will be held at Broadrake Bunkbarn, nestled at the foot of Whernside, where we will begin by learning how to identify the different species of waxcap mushrooms. We will then spend time exploring Broadrake's haymeadow, finding mushrooms together and practising our ID skills.
In the second part of the session, we will go indoors and look at some more fungi up close. We will spend time observing the specimens, working on our ID skills and finally produce simple sketches to record their key features. We will provide some art materials, and tips to capture these wonderful organisms on paper. Aside from the usual drawing pencils and pastels, you’ll also have the chance to experiment with natural inks made from plants and other organic sources.

Frequently asked questions
Not at all - this session is aimed at beginners and will assume no prior technical knowledge. We aim to send you away with the confidence to identify waxcap mushrooms and distinguish between the more common varieties.
Again, no - this is a session for anyone, whether you're a complete novice or an enthusiastic amateur.
Not very far, but we will be covering some uneven ground so you need good footwear. The meadow is immediately behind the barn, and the amount of time we spend outside will very much depend on the weather.
Of course - just make sure you let us know when you book.
